Do an ironman => qualify for Kona Personal: I am 22, French, and a psych major at the U. I plan on getting a PhD in counseling psych after that. I lived 17 years in France, 1 in mexico, and 5 in the US.
I actually smoked for 3 years and the first time I really trained for a race was for the SLC marathon in 2011; at the time I knew nothing about running, I had shoes too small for me, had never run more than 16mi, and got injured a month before.... my race was miserable, but I realized how strong I could be. I have been serious about running and training since March 2012
Fun fact: I cannot eat prior to a race because I am ALWAYS gagging in the last 0.6/0.5mi... Not sure if that is normal |

SLC 1/2 course - 1:29:44
Wanted to run the course to see what I d be up to in April. Got lost a few times and had to take a lot of breaks because of the lights, or to check the map - which explains the "fast" miles. Got my butt kicked by 20mph south wind in the first part
Hopefully I don't space out the blog like last year. I'm really amazed at the quantity of high quality runners than hang out here |

Striders WRC 10 mile
Nice temperatures (37) made today a pretty good day to race, though there was a 10mph northwest wind. Unfortunately, I had not had much quality sleep in the last few days which was not ideal.
Because this was my first 10mi race, I was a bit apprehensive. According to my calculations, which were right on target for the WRC 10K, I should have been able to run in 1:05:30, so I made plans accordingly. It was quickly apparent, however, that I could not run that fast, especially with the hills killing me: this course had 930ft gain and loss.
For the first 4 miles, I had a guy approximately 30s in front of me. I was really trying to focus on my own race, and not get sucked into it. However, the gap slowly decreased until I was right next to him for the beginning of the killer hills - miles 5,6,and 7 had an elevation of +657ft / -105ft. We pretty much ran side by side during the first hill. In the short downhill that followed, he stopped for 5s to get some water, I did not. Nonetheless, he was back on my heels at the end of the second hill. By that time, we were both in pretty bad shape… with a LOT of oxygen debt. He was right behind me in the downhill, I could not shake him up, and I knew I would fade soon enough. Right before reaching mile 8, there was a last water station, I was counting on him briefly stopping for a drink. He did, I went harder. I was determined to build a big enough lead that would last. My calves were starting to be really tight by that time as this was my first run over 8mi in Altras, but still, mile 9 went pretty well. I faded hard in the last mile, the last uphill killed me... My form deteriorated a lot.. I nervously looked back, but he seemed too far back to challenge. Thankfully, he was, I had to use all my strength to simply keep my pace from falling. After a last grueling effort, I finally made it to the finish line in 1:06:50. Tough I was supposed to be faster, I am really happy as I don't see how I could have done any better.

Race plan was 5:29, 6:08, 6:03...
Ugh I hate those races starting at 11am... I just don't have the strength to push myself... Anyway, was empty after 1.7mi... I knew the course would be shorter, so I was aiming for 18:00.. finished in 18:45 :( AND I did not even gag = something really wrong here haha.
I was not planning on running the next race, which is 3 hours after the SLC 1/2, but now I might run it just to hold my 1st place in the cumulative ranking. 4 of us have the same amount of points, which are given based on age group ranking, but avg pace is tie breaker.

Today I decided to change my routine a little by reducing the speed (from 5:40 to 6:00 pace) and increasing the number of repetitions (from 3 to 5). Last year, I could do 3 x 1mi @ 10mph, so I wanted to try doing 4 or 5 of those, and it worked! :) Third rep was a pain with first 0.3mi uphill with slight headwind; last one was all downhill so I tried to go harder.

2mi on my own harder, and then 2mi easy with the team challenge coach. Would have done more, but needed to attend a lecture.
